mu

Functioning of the code

mu is a code designed to express propositions of choreographic movement.

So:

A proposition is made up of two segments: an ensemble segment on the left and a plan segment on the right. The ensemble segment shows which parts of the body are involved in a movement, the plan segment shows the relationships with surrounding space of one or more body parts. To read the plan segment it is always necessary to read the ensemble segment first. The particular way in which a body part is involved and its relationship to the plan are up to the interpreter.

Proposition-references for the examples:

Ensemble 1:

E1:

A : hand
B : forearm
C : shoulder
D : chest
M- : side
M : —-
M+ : hip
W : thigh
X : knee
Y : heel
Z : toe

Plans :

P1: wall; P2: ceiling; P3: floor

In the ensemble segment, vertical mention of letters means the succession of solicitations. Their horizontal mention, synchrony. We kept the same rule in the reading. In the plan segment, the mention “P1”, without other indication, means that all solicitated body parts are in relationship to the plan P1.

“i” : inverted. In this case small letters are used in the ensemble segment to indicate that the body parts involved refer to the inverted ensemble.

To show the relationship of a specific body part to a plan, small letters are used in the plan segment. These small letters refer to the letters mentioned in the ensemble segment, not in the reference ensemble (as it appears on the left); so to read a proposition it is essential to decipher the ensemble segment before the plan segment.
